Rachel Hayhurst

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’ve always been a creative at heart. Painting is my release, my outlet, my escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy day to day. Formally trained in Commercial Art and Marketing, I continue to hone my artistic practice alongside a career in health information and management. I also love photography, landscapes and wildlife, plus sport action shots; on weekends you’ll often find me supporting my football mad family and capturing memories for others.

What is your favourite drink?
That’s a hard one. I like to kick start the day with a good coffee and have always loved refreshing lemon squash. A frozen margarita (good ones are hard to find) brings back so many happy memories of my university years in Atlanta but I’m partial to a good G&T and now there are so many wonderful boutique botanicals to try. Is it gin o’clock yet?

What inspired you to start painting/drawing?
I’ve been doodling, drawing and creating for as long as I can remember. When I started a Marketing degree, several university lecturers encouraged me to take my art more seriously and I completed a second major. I’m eternally grateful to those mentors for their guidance and encouragement. Whilst the principles and foundations of my training are fundamentally transferable one might argue I’m largely a self-taught fine artist and am quickly learning the ins and outs of the art world. Exploring such a variety of medium in my training means I don’t fear trying new things and treading new paths.

What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?Believe in yourself and stay strong despite the naysayers and knockbacks. Don’t underestimate the needs of running your own business; artists wear many hats, don’t expect to be painting full time. This is a highly competitive crowded market; multiple income streams are essential while you establish your name. Join and contribute to an artist network - there are lots to choose from.
