Rebecca Koerting
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My husband and I live in Mt Lawley, Perth where I work out of home studio. I am a mum to three beautiful girls Harlow, Sadie & Ginger so I paint whenever I get time. I have a Diploma in Graphic Design and the 20 years I have been in this industry have helped me build the knowledge and skills to paint the artworks I am currently producing.
What is your favourite drink?
I can’t go past a buttery chardonnay.
What inspired you to start painting/drawing?
Growing up in a small coastal town I was no stranger to the salty air and freshness of the Australian ocean. Many of my days as a child were spent on the sandy shores of the local beaches, splashing in the sea.
My paintings are strongly influenced by these childhood memories. I was forever daydreaming about different worlds, especially worlds beneath the ocean’s surface. I loved seeing this world in colour and really feeling these colours within my soul.
The ocean is a magical place and any light I can shine on it can hopefully help draw awareness to the energy we need to put into preserving it.
What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?
Paint what makes you happy, not what you think others want to see.
I was 41 (still am!) when I started my instagram page. It’s a new (and scary) world to artists who haven’t grown up with social media. It was daunting but now I have grown to love it and appreciate it for what it is. I love that positivity that buzzes around the art community. Being uplifting on artists social media pages and acknowledging them is the perfect way to support us.
