Marion Hughes

Tell us a little bit about you?
I started my art journey really young, drawing mainly. I did not do anything more until I was in my 30’s and I started out with doing decorative painting until I happened to discover watercolour. I was hooked! I have been painting for 30+ years and in the last 12 years have also taken up teaching. I am a passionate watercolourist.

I have in recent times been associated with The Australian Watercolour Muster, an exhibition in Italy where representatives from 80+ countries get to display their work to the world as it is highly promoted. I have been a finalist 3 yrs running. In 2019, my painting was selected to be in catalogue, the following year Covid took hold and it was held virtually but not every country was able to partake. This year my painting was chosen as one of the 32 and hangs on display in the Old Courthouse in Cairns until the 23rd Oct. This painting and 31 others will eventually be sent to Italy for Fabriano in Acquarello once again covid willing.

What is your favourite drink?
A good latte or a turmeric latte and on a really hot day a Gin & Tonic with cucumber.

What inspired you to start painting?
My inspiration comes from my love of birds and animals, flowers and nature in general and now painting portraits.I love selling my paintings to people who connect with my art. Art Directory Australia is a great outlet for me. I have a love of teaching beginners all about the magic of watercolour.

What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?
Drawing is the foundation of art especially when depicting animals, birds and portraits. Practice everyday, even for a few minutes. Don’t give up!!
