Jacklyn Foster
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am an award winning, abstract artist, art teacher, creative mentor, based in Geelong, VIC. I work from home, under the watchful eye of my Cavoodle Ruby, and alongside my wonderful assistant Katie. I specialise in abstract still life pieces, and have also exhibited across Victoria with so many more projects yet to come that I can't wait to share. I have worked with some incredible companies throughout my art career, including the Royal Children's Hospital and the RSPCA just to name a few. Before becoming a full time artist, some jobs I worked include pharmacy assistant, receptionist, lifeguard, delivering meals on wheels, and mentoring young people. I love reading, creating, baking, and my favourite shows include Frasier and the Office. I also love a good pun, and anything remotely funny.
What is your favourite drink?
My favourite drink is definitely coffee, I feel like everyone will say that haha! Definitely puts a spring in my step throughout the day when I need it! I limit myself to one cup a day, or two if I have to be awake past 9pm...
What inspired you to start painting?
I grew up in regional Victoria, and spent my holidays creating and painting. Winning colouring competitions and local art competitions. I adored creating, but when I turned 18, under societal pressure I stopped creating and started an Occupational Therapy degree. Which I never finished. After we got married, and I was still working in my part time job, I rediscovered my love for creating and it flourished from there! When the pandemic hit and my hours were cut, I used the extra time to invest in my art.
What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?My motto towards everything is "Could be great, could be awful". At least give it a go. You won't know until you've tried it. What could be the best case scenario? Instead of jumping to the worst, that things won't work out, your art won't sell etc... switch it around. What if it does work out? What if your art dream does happen? And it could happen even better than you ever imagined. And if doesn't work? So what, at least you gave it a go, and that takes bravery.
