Harry Martel
Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Harry Martel, owner of ‘Martel’s Art’ and I am from a small island called Guernsey in the British Isles. I studied Economics at University but I have always had a love for art, particularly drawing and painting. I lived abroad in Australia and New Zealand for almost four years, before returning to the UK very recently. The more relaxed lifestyle, sunny days, vibrant wildlife and scenery, along with talented AUS/NZ artists, all inspired me to start creating again when I was travelling. When I'm not drawing you'll find me running, in the gym or doing some kind of exercise as health and fitness is a top priority in my life. I find the combination of art and exercise good for my overall well-being!
What is your favourite drink?
Definitely depends on the occasion! I will always start my day with a green tea but find me in an English pub on a cold day and I'll be sinking a well poured Guinness. My 10 months living in Adelaide also made me appreciate a good wine too!
What inspired you to start drawing?
My older sister and I have a great relationship and I remember drawing cartoons with her when I was really young. My parents encouraged my drawing and always gave their honest feedback for my weekly homework tasks. I just found art throughout school so incredibly fun until the pressure of university came along. I loved my degree but art took a back seat for many years until I recently picked it up again. After buying a small sketchbook to keep my mind busy whilst travelling, I am now combining my art and my economic/business skills to pursue a small business which I’m excited to see grow!
What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?
If you love it, just get creating! I have always drawn for my own enjoyment but it’s very rewarding creating pieces for people and receiving positive feedback. I took a while to launch an art social media page as I had worries as to why it wouldn’t work but things have had a way of falling into place. I’m still only just starting out too but I would suggest connecting and learning from others as much as you can. Joining The Art Directory Australia has really helped me with this.
