Amy Compton
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I'm Amy, Sydney born and bred, currently living my best life in the 'burbs with my gorgeous hubby and three kids (aged one, three and seven). I guess you could say that I'm a relative late-comer to the art scene as I spent my 20s and 30s pursuing a career in the media industry. These days, when I'm not running around after the kids (which is most of the time), I am painting up a storm in the kids' toy room which I have taken over as my makeshift studio. My goal is to become a full-time artist once my youngest is at school. Let's call it a Five Year Plan! My husband has agreed to build me a studio in the garden.
What is your favourite drink?
I love to start my day with a cup or two of English Breakfast tea. I usually follow this up with a mid-morning coffee. I’m partial to a G&T or two on the weekend!
What inspired you to start painting?
I started this art thing in 2019 as a way to satisfy a long-standing creative urge. What started as a doodle on the couch has gradually morphed into a daily practice and a full-blown passion. In fact, I can confidently say that I've found my calling at the ripe old age of 44. It's a relief to finally know with absolute certainty what I want to do with my life.
What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?
Have a daily art practice: this has really helped to progress my art.
Work in a sketchbook: this is a great way to experiment with different ideas on a small scale before committing to a large canvas.
Have a permanent art space: I recommend setting up a permanent space in your home where you can do your art.
Be brave: don’t get too comfortable. Keep pushing your comfort zone and experimenting with different materials and techniques.
