Lisa Kerr

Tell us a little bit about you?
I live with my family in the east of Melbourne near 100 acres of bushland. Nature has always filled my cup, so I feel really blessed to have this on my doorstep.

I studied graphic design, married a landscaper, became a landscape designer, and in the last few years picked up the paintbrushes again to paint botanically inspired art.

What is your favourite drink?
A good coffee! I love it. I am a true Melbourne girl.

What inspired you to start painting?
I have drawn all of my life and so painting and drawing feels like a natural expression of who I am. As for more seriously beginning to give more time to this side of me, I began making little cards and prints and small paintings for markets in 2018 after having a dream (an asleep dream) which felt like a clear invitation to step into a new creative season.

What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?
I think perseverance and backing yourself is so important. And while being aware of trends and what is currently ‘in’, it’s so important to enjoy your own work and paint what’s true to you. Be authentic and keep joy as the source of what you do. Fear and comparison crushes creativity: have a strong narrative around your joyful expression and value your creative contribution.
