Kerrie Lord
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am a self taught abstract artist, living in Adelaide, South Australia. After studying and loving art in high school, I put that more creative part of myself aside to focus on building a "real" career. I've always indulged in other forms of art and colour, through my love of fashion, interior design and admiring others' art, but about six years ago I picked up a paintbrush again. Since then, I've really enjoyed building on this creative outlet, turning it into a hobby, and now a blossoming little business. I feel so grateful for every step of this journey and am so excited to see where it takes me next.
What is your favourite drink?
Being from the UK originally, I am of course a sucker for a good cuppa. I also love my herbal teas, and you can catch me sipping on some delicious herbal T2 brews quite regularly. One of my morning rituals is to sit with my cup of tea, relax and think about the day ahead.
I am also a big gin lover, and really enjoy a delicious G&T or gin based cocktail. We're so blessed in Australia to have so many local Aussie gin makers, and my favourite has to be 23rd Street Distillery Signature Gin. Yum!
What inspired you to start painting?
I've always loved art, but what got me back into it was honestly a "hobby day" with my friend. We bought some canvas and paints to make some wall art for our rooms at the time, and I just really enjoyed playing around with paint, texture, colour. In my work I'm inspired by just about anything with colour: flowers, the ocean, a beautiful sunset, rich colourful fabrics, you name it. I really love to find ways to put colours together that you usually wouldn't think go together and I love being able to create something that will hang in a person's space and encourage them to feel what I felt when I painted it.
What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?Back yourself, and take your time to experiment and find what works for you. Over the last six years I've kind of tried a few different things, explored what works well for me and what doesn't. I've tried new mediums, different tools, and I've really settled on my current style. You won't know what fits you until you give it a go, and it doesn't have to be perfect or even sell at the start. Just create for you, create for your friends and family and slowly find confidence to then go on and create for others. Also - don't get too bogged down by social media algorithm's and trends... it's hard not to be sucked in and want that follower or view count to be really high... as long as people are finding and engaging with your work, let those metrics be your success rather than the number of followers you have, or views on your latest reel.
