Cassi George
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I live in Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia - along the coast and north of the river. It's a beautiful place to live with a vibrant local community. I'm a mother to an energetic toddler and partner to the man of my dreams. I'm also a creative human - who loves to spend time with family, cracks inappropriate jokes and cannot seem to keep my clothes in the closet (much to the dismay of said man of dreams).
What is your favourite drink?
Gin and Soda is an easy go-to for any social occasion but I also make an epic dragon fruit margarita - it's my signature cocktail !
What inspired you to start painting/drawing?
For as long as I remember I've been creating. Whether its crafty projects, visual merchandising, DIY-ing etc. Painting has always been my main love though- I studied art in High School and then began a Cert IV of Visual Arts and Contemporary Crafts once I graduated. Sadly I never finished this as I was 18 and needed to pay the rent, so off I went into full time employment! It’s easy to put those young dreams on hold as you get caught up in the day to day of things.
Before I started my instagram page just over a year ago I was heavily focused on painting portraits, then I had my baby boy and found myself a little time poor and not wanting to crack out the oil paints but I still found myself drawn to the canvas so decided to try out abstract art - to loosen up with my colours and brush strokes, to feel myself around the space and problem solve the composition as I go. My energy around the art shifted and became more lively and bold. I could concentrate my efforts, but still be distracted and come back to the piece with fresh eyes ( as often happens with a baby in tow) Needless to say I fell in love with the the whole process from start to finish!
What advice would you give other artists/creatives starting out?
To treat your creative practice like you would any relationship that’s important to you. It requires nurturing, staying in touch and showing you care! We all have seasons in life where we get busy- friends understand that and when you don’t have time to catch up you can show you care by sending a text to say you’re thinking of them, just as you can spend 5 minutes reading an article or listening to a podcast relevant to your creative field. Treat your creative practice like you would any important relationship.
